Join us in the discussion with Seth Klein on how Canada can respond to the climate emergency where Seth outlines how employment concerns and climate change can be aligned. It is not an either/or choice. Mobilization to a worldwide pandemic has demonstrated that leadership, joint effort and investment by government, industry, media and citizenry is possible. In the face of a climate emergency, Seth Klein draws analogies from historical wartime mobilization to retool our economy in the space of a few years, improving health outcomes while reducing social inequality. If not now, when?

Set to open in April, Better Homes Kingston is a property loan program that will help owners of single-family homes realize energy-saving retrofits. It will achieve this by giving eligible individuals access to a no-interest loan, re-payable over a period of up to 20 years. The webinar will be presented by Julie Salter-Keane, Manager of the City’s Climate Leadership Division. “Home retrofits are an important climate action and just one more way the City of Kingston is demonstrating leadership on climate action,” says Salter-Keane. Not only is the program good for the local industry and homeowners, it’s also good for our environment. “A more energy-efficient home will increase comfort, affordability, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” says Salter-Keane.

Urban Development has resulted in large areas of impermeable surfaces, leading to poor water quality and erosion, as well as drying of the creeks during droughts. Techniques will be discussed to aid in infiltrating rainwater into the soil while beautifying your landscapes and allowing a more unusual palette of plants to be used. Rain Gardens can be a beautiful addition to any yard and allow the planting of some truly interesting plants. They also
help the environment by infiltrating water to clean it and restore the water table and base-flow (the water that seeps through the ground to our creeks). We’ll cover how to design and build a rain garden including placement, construction, and plant choices.
